The Hero

What does Jesus of Nazareth have in common with movie characters like Kevin McAllister, Luke Skywalker, Simba, Cinderella, John McClane, Superman, Katherine Goble, ET, Indiana Jones, Dr Richard Kimble, Private Desmond Doss, T’Chala and even Joker?The answer- he’s a hero who gives his all for a cause greater than himself. Jesus embodies all twelve stages of what is known in Hollywood as The Hero’s Journey - a journey deriving from Joseph Campbell’s study of worldwide myths.Jesus travels this journey except with this one great difference: He does it in history not in myth, in fact not in fiction. Jesus is therefore the archetypal hero. And He bids us start our own Hero’s Journey. Truly, Jesus deserves the ultimate Oscar.
